Sheex Sheets: Are They Right for You?

Bed maid-up with clean white pillows and bed sheets with sun flare through window

Sheex sheets are marketed as ultra-soft fabric original performance bedding. The fabric of Sheex bed sheets is a result of its innovative Sleepfit Technology that leads to a lightweight quick-drying and cooling sheet. The manufacturer adds that such moisture-wicking breathable fabric provides improved ventilation to maximize air and moisture escape.

This is great because it helps keep your body temperature low by wicking away moisture and reducing perspiration to keep you cool throughout the night. As you can see, you’re able to breathe better than with tightly woven high-thread-count cotton.

The cutting-edge technology of these soft sheets feels silky on your skin, lulling you into a calm night of rejuvenating sleep. Not only are they long-lasting, wrinkle free, and durable but they actually get softer with every wash. The best way to ensure they won’t shrink, fade, or pill is to wash them with cold water without bleach or fabric softener and tumble dry on low without using a dryer sheet.

The Brain Behind Sheex Sheets

According to the story on the website of this product, Michelle Brooke-Marciniak and Susan Walvius were basketball coaches at the University of South Carolina. Michelle, a superstar athlete and fitness fanatic, was wearing her favorite performance fabric athletic gear one sunny summer in 2007 — she often wore it for training.

Susan was wearing the same gear but made a different connection that summer day and expressed it out loud: “I would love to have bed sheets made out of this stuff,” she said. Michelle immediately responded, “Let’s do it,” without even thinking it through. It was the beginning of their journey to transform the bedding industry and help people get a better night‘s sleep through their Sheex products, just as their clothing had helped them perform better day after day.

Sheex Sheets: Are They Right for You?

You might want to invest in new sheets if getting them to hug your mattress feels like a wrestling match or if you’ve been replacing them more often than you like. As we mentioned above, the Sheex bedding brand was started by former athletes and basketball coaches Susan Walvius and Michelle Marciniak

They make some bold claims about their performance sheets being original, ridiculously soft, and durable which, as we said, are supposed to be wrinkle-free, stay on all night, wick moisture, and control temperature. Let’s find out if this product lives up to the hype.

Our Thoughts

This product is at a high end price point so, depending on the style and size you choose, you might spend up to $300 on a set of these performance sheets. The fabric can feel rough against dry skin, usually around the feet so it gets caught up on dry skin areas.

The “Original Performance” fabric of the Sheex bed sheet is 87 percent microfiber polyester, 13 percent spandex and you’ll definitely love the look as soon as you remove the packaging. They’re soft and lightweight and seem to have been inspired by the athletic apparel material that can keep athletes cool and comfortable.

Making the bed with the fitted Sheex performance sheet is easy as it lays completely flat and the bed looks smooth and wrinkle free. The top sheet lies flat too and keeps the comforter nice and smooth as  well. It pretty much looked the same the next morning so the claim that the sheets are made for a comfortable night‘s sleep and to wipe out distractions like coming untucked seems to be true.

The customer reviews of the Sheex website holds 5-star ratings with many of them saying this product is the best ever.

In short, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive and one reviewer says the fabric of these sheets is “like Spanx for your bed.” It seems to be dead on as it definitely hugs your bed all around.

Hypoallergenic Bedding: Can It Really Help You Sleep Better?

The word “hypoallergenic” in the context of bedding mainly means that materials, substances, or fabrication methods of a given product won’t cause allergic reactions in most regular Joes and Janes. Note the word “most” here. Many people are susceptible to allergies and can’t tolerate certain skin products or fabrics because they can create a rash.

Furthermore, hypoallergenic bedding isn’t really resistant to accumulating allergens and thus, it’s neither allergy proof nor will it prevent allergies. As you may already know, allergens are part of everyday life and so they’re everywhere. Going back to the term “hypoallergenic,” let’s find out what it actually refers to in the context of bedding

Okay, what’s all the hype about hypoallergenic bedding anyway? Well, if you’re anything like the rest of us, you spend about eight hours of ever day wrapped up in your sheets. Switching to a hypoallergenic sheet brand can provide some relief to you if you’re prone to allergies. However, simply making your bed with a new fresh set of regular sheets will do it as well.

Dust Mite Covers and Seasonal Allergies

This is an article about hypoallergenic bedding, so we must talk about the super cute little arachnids that feed on your oh-so-ever-tasty dead skin cells — these are cosmopolitan members of the mite family Pyroglyphidae. Yup, these microscopic bugs are actually related to ticks and spiders but way smaller — about 0.2-0.3 mm long. Their translucent bodies make them barely visible to the naked eye.

As we mentioned above, these lovely bugs feed on skin flakes (it’s kind of like corn flakes to them) be it yours or your pet’s, as well as some types of mold. The microscopic arachnids thrive in warm, humid places and your bedding is the perfect environment for them. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of dust mite allergy include sneezing and a runny nose although some may also experience wheezing and difficulty breathing.

You may not know it but about 10% of the weight of a two year old pillow is comprised by mite mummies and their stale droppings. This is why some doctors who specialize in allergies advise using dust mite covers, usually made with a very tightly woven encasing or with an impermeable backing. This is mainly to stop feeding the mites with your yummy dead skin flakes. The same goes for specially designed dust mite covers for mattresses and box spring pads.

As for seasonal allergies, the best way to know if you’re afflicted by these is you often wake up with itchy, puffy eyes. However, it could also be that you’re allergic to your bedding. In any case, you wake up nearly as stuffy as an English butler.

Spring allergies begin in February and last until the early summer in many areas of the US as tree pollination begins earliest in the year. Then there’s grass pollination later in the spring and summer followed by ragweed in the late summer and fall. Note that grass pollinates throughout a good portion of the year in tropical climates. In turn, mild winter temperatures lead to early plant pollination while a rainy spring promotes rapid plant growth followed by an increase in mold. Thus, the symptoms of your seasonal allergies might in fact last well into the fall — depending on where you live.

Ragweed is the most common culprit for fall allergies. This plant grows wild nearly everywhere but is most common on the East Coast and in the Midwest. It blooms and releases pollen from August to November and its pollen levels are highest in early to mid-September in certain areas of the country.

The Skinny on Hypoallergenic Bedding

So, can hypoallergenic bedding actually improve your sleep? Well, let’s see what this word actually means. “Hypo” means “less than” so when you add it to the word “allergy,” it simply means something is less likely to induce an allergic reaction in this context —bedding in this case. Thus, you must be aware that it doesn’t mean your bedding is a hundred percent allergy-free, only that it doesn’t contain harsh fragrances or chemicals.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) here in the US has no standard to prove a product is hypoallergenic or not. Thus, simply read the label if you’re worried about a product containing a specific allergen.

Furthermore, the term “hypoallergenic” originated in cosmetics to refer to those products that produce fewer allergic reactions than others. People are often led to believe that such products are gentler to their skin than their non-hypoallergenic counterparts.

So, there are no Federal standards as to the use of the term “hypoallergenic”and companies use it according to what they want it to mean because they’re not required to submit proof of their claims. As you can imagine, the term “hypoallergenic” has considerable market value when it comes to promoting products but it basically means nothing, according to skin experts.

The FDA Consumer magazine published an article in April 1978 that provides additional information on the term “hypoallergenic” after a Federal court struck down an FDA regulation requiring manufacturers to conduct tests to back up any claim that their product was in fact hypoallergenic.

The decision meant the term has no real meaning in the marketplace. Thus, the materials or ingredients required in product labeling can help you determine if there’s a significant difference between hypoallergenic and those that aren’t labeled so.

In Conclusion

People concerned about allergic reactions from products should know there’s no such thing as a “non-allergenic” product as allergies vary from person to person and nobody can guarantee that something, somewhere, won’t lead to an allergy for a given someone.

For the most part, the basic materials in so-called “hypoallergenic” products seem to be the same as those used in other similar products. The FDA issued final regulation on the “hypoallergenic” term on June 6, 1975. It required comparative tests but changed the procedures for carrying them out to reduce manufacturing costs.

Of course, some manufacturers of hypoallergenic products quickly challenged the decision made by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia but the court sided up with the FDA.

The firms appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, of course. It was at that level that the FDA regulation became invalid. This court held that the FDA definition of “hypoallergenic” was unreasonable as the FDA had failed to demonstrate that consumers perceive it as the agency described it in its regulation.

In short, manufacturers continue to label and advertise their cosmetics as “hypoallergenic” and make all kinds of claims without supporting evidence. You can certainly stick to certain materials that you already know you’re not allergic to and protect yourself. After all, FDA regulations do require a list of materials and ingredients to be part of product labeling. So, always read the labels, not only in Sheex sheets packaging but in every other product you might buy. Hopefully you will find that Sheex sheets are your key to a good night’s sleep!
