Dormeo Mattress Topper Review: Worth the Money?

Want to upgrade your mattress, but don't want to spend money on a brand new one? The Dormeo mattress topper might be for you. This specialized recovery foam mattress topper keeps your mattress feeling soft, new, and clean, plus you'll find yourself waking up with no more back or hip pain from the topper's spinal support. With plenty of other mattress toppers available, it's difficult to decide which one is best. This guide contains everything on what makes the best mattress topper and if the Dormeo mattress topper worth the purchase.

What Is a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper is an individually sold product that you place on top of your mattress before your sheets to keep your mattress clean and also give it a softer, new feel. Some mattress toppers can provide firmness but most focus on soft cushioning for your mattress. This way, you don't need to purchase a new mattress if yours is old and you can switch up the feel whenever you want. If you're always on the go and find yourself having difficulty sleeping on different uncomfortable mattresses, you can take a mattress topper with you and use it to make any mattress comfortable.

A mattress topper is also known as a mattress protector or mattress cover, but it's not the same as a mattress pad. A little known fact is that most mattresses become firmer as the years go by. You may not notice this because of the gradual change, but you might start feeling that your mattress is uncomfortable without knowing why. This is where a topper comes in, that won't feel too firm with your mattress and it'll restore the perfect balance between soft and firm.

Mattress toppers are typically going to be thick and slightly heavy due to the filling. They can be made of many different materials, which are covered in the topics below. In addition to comfort, mattress toppers provide other benefits. Their cushioning can help your posture and support your spine and neck while you sleep in any position to reduce pain. It can also extend the life of your mattress if you use it regularly as it will take some of the impact of tossing and turning.

Lastly, a mattress cover will keep your actual mattress clean. It's thick layers absorb moisture from sweat, spills, and dirt so that they don't seep into the mattress and get it dirty. If there's ever a spill, you can just remove the mattress topper and throw it in the washing machine without your mattress ever getting a stain. This makes it a the best mattress topper for families with young children that can wet the bed or frequently spill liquids on the covers.

Mattress Topper vs. Mattress Pad

A mattress topper, or cover, is actually not the same as a mattress pad. A mattress pad isn't made to alter the feel of the bed and is more to protect it from spills. It's slightly less versatile than a mattress topper, but it is also cheaper. The main difference is that a mattress pad will be lighter and thinner and won't drastically change the firmness/softness of your mattress. Mattress pads range from twenty to several hundred dollars depending on brand, features, and materials.

In terms of durability, a mattress topper may last slightly longer, but will generally have the same lifespan as a mattress pad. Mattress pads are also typically machine washable while some mattress toppers are not or they have a separate removable cover that can be machine washed, so more maintenance is required. Mattress pads are typically made with wool, polyester fiber fill, or feathers/down. Mattress covers, on the other hand, might use latex, down, traditional memory foam, or wool.

So which should you pick? Decide what you want to focus on: feel or cleanliness. If a clean mattress is more important to you, consider a mattress pad. If you are looking for a product that will alter the feeling of your mattress for a fraction of the price of a new mattress, consider a mattress cover. However, you don't necessarily need to pick one– using both a mattress topper and pad can provide the ultimate comfortable and clean experience. Put the mattress pad over the topper and then place your bedding on.

How to Use a Mattress Topper

When your product first arrives, it will likely be in a vacuum sealed case or compressed in a bag/box. Remove it from the packaging and let it sit for a day or two: this will allow it to slowly expand from its compressed state. Then, place the mattress topper over your mattress directly before your fitted sheet. Then make your bed as usual and ensure your topper is secured to the mattress so that it does not slide around. If you are using the mattress topper with a pad, place the mattress pad over the topper before the bedding.

Materials

The Dormeo Mattress topper uses recovery foam. This is not the exact same as memory foam — recovery foam is 8 times more breathable than a memory foam mattress topper. It's made out of synthetic materials including viscoelastic foam, and uses 50 percent less material than a memory foam topper to reduce environmental footprint. The product is US Certipur certified so that no harmful chemicals are used in the product for your safety. Both recovery foam and a memory foam mattress topper use viscoelastic foam.

The topper is designed in three layers. The first layer is the recovery foam, then a layer of patented Octaspring Technology which helps with spinal posture and alignment and is made of polyurethane. The final layer is the supportive base. The entire topper also arrives with an easy to remove cover that is machine washable made of polyester so that you don't need to wash the entire topper. The cover and topper are made of hypoallergenic material. It is important to note that no latex is used in the manufacturing of this topper.

Shipping and Returns

All Dormeo products ship from Atlanta, Georgia, and shipping is free via USPS in all states except for Alaska and Hawaii. You can expect your product to arrive within 5-7 days. Returns are free as well and can be made within the 100 night sleep trial period.

Sleep Trial and Warranty

Ensuring that the company you are purchasing from offers a sleep trial is one of the most important things you can do before buying. A sleep trial is a surefire way to know that a company is reliable and won't sell you a bad product. This means you can purchase a sleep product and try it out for a certain number of nights, and if you still haven't adjusted to it or decide it's not for you, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked.

Dormeo offers a 100 night sleep trial on their mattress topper and other products. However, you must use the topper for a minimum of thirty nights because it may take that long for your body to adjust to the new sensation while you sleep which may make it seem uncomfortable at first. If you still don't like it after thirty days, you have the hundred day window to return the product.

Also, all Dormeo products come with a ten year limited warranty. You can get a full refund or replacement if there are any defects in your product within this window.

Pricing, Sizes, and Dimensions

Now for the numbers. The Dormeo mattress topper arrives in endless sizes to fit every single type of bed. They use standard size measurements in US inches:

Twin 75"L x 38"W x 3"H
Twin XL 80”L x 38”W x 3"H
Full 75"L x 54"W x 3"H
Queen 80"L x 60"W x 3"H
RV Short Queen 75"L x 60"W x 3"H
King 80"L x 76"W x 3"H
RV Short King 75”L x 72”W x 3”H
RV King 80"L x 72"W x 3"H
Split Head King 80”L x 76”W x 3”H
Cal King 84"L x 72"W x 3"H

The twin topper package weighs 15 lbs and is $254. Twin XL, Full, Queen, and RV Short Queen weigh 18, 23, 27, and 26 lbs and cost $266, $308, $359, and $359, respectively. King, RV King, RV Short King, and Split Head King all cost $424 but weigh 34, 31, 30, and 32 pounds. California King weighs 33 pounds and costs $424 as well.

For comparison, the average cost of a queen sized mattress topper will range between $150 and $400 dollars. Dormeo's queen topper costs $359, placing it on the higher end of the price range. This is due to the highly regarded brand status and the quality of the materials (down, polyfoam or 'egg crate', and wool mattress toppers will be cheaper, but not as high quality).

Ratings

The Dormeo mattress topper is rated 4 stars on Amazon with over 800 ratings. Customers rated the 'comfort' features as the highest, and 'softness' at the lowest, but with only a 0.7 difference between the two. Value of money was rated at a 3.8. One of the highlights of the topper that customers mentioned in the top positive reviews is the way that the topper helped with muscle and back pain– some say it helped with immediate relief after just a few nights. Many say it helped with shoulder pain and numbness/tingling as well. The top critical reviews mention that it was more firm then they liked or that it was not as cooling as expected. Dormeo is rated 5 stars on Better Business Bureau. Many reviews state that they initially experienced some discomfort, but stuck with the product, and ended up experiencing the best nights of sleep they have had after a few nights.

Dormeo Mattress Topper Benefits

So what makes the Dormeo the best mattress topper? First, versatility: this mattress topper is designed as a piece that doesn't just wrap around a mattress like a fitted sheet. It's flat and standalone design can also transform anything else into a bed if you don't have room for a full sized bed or are temporarily sleeping on a couch or guest bed– or even the floor! Simply use the comfortable plush mattress topper on any surface and sleep on top.

Additionally, the ergonomic design of the topper ensures pain relief in the back, hips, and neck. It works by adjusting its shape to your sleeping position whether you are a back, side, or stomach sleeper and using Dormeo Octasmart technology to deliver relief to major pressure points. You'll feel better after you wake up because you'll be more well-rested after sleeping comfortably with the topper.

The recovery foam materials of the topper also ensure cool sleep. Again, it's 8 times more breathable than other toppers. This topper doesn't have any holes in the foam (which can lead to flatness) or harmful chemicals to achieve this; it's simply made of fluffy, breathable materials. This helps your body regulate temperature at night. Many studies show that a hot temperature is a major disruption to sleep, and one particular study shows that those who sleep in too warm of an environment wake up the next day with higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, than those who don't.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Dormeo mattress topper is a much cheaper alternative to a brand new mattress that can transform your nighttime experience. This topper arrives in many different sizes and also has a removable and washable cover. It uses recovery foam, a supportive base, and patented Octaspring Technology to help target pressure points and relieve pain, as well as revive an old mattress and make it more comfortable than ever. It can also transform sofas and even floors to temporary beds by being used alone. Here's a quick recap of this product's pros and cons:

Pros

The Dormeo mattress topper uses recovery foam, which is viscoelastic foam 8 times more breathable than a memory foam mattress topper. All of the materials in the product receive a thumbs up– they are environmentally safe, do not contain harmful chemicals, and are durable and hypo-allergenic. A latex mattress topper can commonly cause itchiness and sometimes severe allergic symptoms.  The Dormeo topper does not contain latex.

The variety of the product is another pro. You can find a mattress topper for any bed size imaginable! Those who have RVs aren't left out. The product also arrives in RV queen and king sizes, and more.  Lastly, the product has a 10 year limited warranty and 100 night sleep trial with free shipping and free returns to 50 states (minus Alaska and Hawaii). A sleep trial is a good measure of a reliable company and gives you the opportunity to try it out with no strings attached if you are not sure.

Cons

The main con would be what is evaluated in this article: price. Due to its quality and brand, the topper is on the higher range of the average. While an average queen mattress topper will range from 150 to 400 dollars, the Dormeo topper sits at $359.

Firmness versus softness is another factor to take into account. Because this mattress cover focuses on pain and pressure relief, it does need to be a little firm. Those who are looking specifically for a product that will make their mattress very soft and may want a more puffy mattress topper.

Worth the Money?

Ultimately, the Dormeo mattress topper's pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. The durable product's layers, materials, and structure are unlike any other. Depending on your situation, this product may well be worth the purchase. Think of how your current mattress feels. If you're waking up with pain or are having trouble sleeping, you may need an upgrade. In this case, the Dormeo mattress topper should do the trick: and if you don't like it, you can return it for free with a 100 night sleep trial.
